Health Challenge #7: Incorporate Pranayama into your life daily
Healthy nutrition is extremely important to living a Spiritfull life! There are many different types of nutrients that we need on a daily basis. Macro and micro nutrients, vitamins and minerals but there is one nutrient we very seldom talk about at all. A nutrient that helps calm and cool the system, manages stress and decreases anxiety, a nutrient that boosts the immune system and can heal depression. This nutrient is our BREATH. Oxygen is a vital nutrient to our body and I truly believe this is the most important nutrient of all! We don’t tend to think of our breath as a nutrient but I’m pretty sure we couldn’t go on without it. Yogi’s have had this knowledge for centuries and have a practice called Pranayama. “Pranayama is control of Breath”. “Prana” is Breath or vital energy in the body. On subtle levels prana represents the pranic energy responsible for life or life force, and “ayama” means control. So Pranayama is “Control of Breath”.The practice of Pranayama has a profound impact on our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.
I’ll be sharing a couple different types of Pranayama during the next couple weeks but the first type and a great beginning practice goes like this: Alternate Nostril Breath
*Before you begin, you may wish to use a tissue to clear your nostrils.
*Sit comfortably in a chair or on a mat, keeping the spine straight.
*Inhale and exhale deeply
*Create a “hang loose” with your right hand. Allow the ring finger to join the pinky in being open.
*Your thumb rests on the right nostril; the ring and baby fingers hover your left nostril.
* Inhale through the left nostril for a count of 5, lift the thumb, press the left nostril close and exhale through the right nostril
*Inhale throughout the right nostril for a count of 5, close the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril for a count of 5.
This completes one round.
*Repeat for 4 rounds.
This is a great practice as you wake in the morning or before you go to bed. See what works best for you!
